Exploring DP Language and Literature
A Schoolwide IB resource prototype
This Roundtable Toolkit has been designed to provide schools and school systems more tools to guide their faculty through an open-minded exploration of the inclusive high-quality design of the DP Language and Literature course. This three part series was developed and piloted by lead educators in Minneapolis Public Schools, Minnesota, USA, to successfully address belief gaps about the benefits of IB for diverse student populations. All participants should have completed the DP Language and Literature Category 1 workshop prior to embarking on this learning progression.
The Roundtable Toolkit Guidebook
Download the companion resource to the presentations and learning engagements for “Exploring DP Language and Literature: removing barriers to learning.” The guide explains the rationale and purpose for each aspect of this community initiative and provides presentation outlines that clarify important communications, and orient teachers who are new to being involved with the IB programmes in their school.
Session one materials: Establishing a shared vision for inclusive ELA courses
The first session leverages current teaching and learning skills to create invitational learning engagements for a diverse range of students. It integrates these skills into the IB framework of inclusive teaching, learning, and assessment by first aligning to what teachers value in the English Language Arts courses they currently teach.
It highlights classroom practices that promote student voice, choice and agency. This foundational session provides a clear, dynamic perspective that links current values and practices to research-based IB standards. Click on the slide image to download.
Session two materials: The value of the written curriculum, for teachers
Session Two expands the focus on IB practices as they align to teachers’ values which aim to meet the learning needs of students and raise expectations. Concepts, inquiry, persuasive argument and global awareness all contribute to students developing and trusting their own voice in global and local contexts. For example, preparation for the Individual Oral assessment highlights student agency, verbal facility, global awareness and course concepts. This session has a companion Teacher Resource Page as well as a Slide Deck.
Session three materials: Engaging all learners in guided analysis
The aim of Session Three is to manage expectations and creating a strong sense of orientation to teaching a range of text types, both literary and non-literary. This is to be accomplished by providing a frame and context for guided analysis. Four questions and color marking techniques offer an approach that will be discussed as principles that teachers can apply to a range of strategies
