Making learning visible: Designing for opportunity and belonging

Great teaching doesn’t just deliver content—it makes learning visible. When we design for all students to see themselves in the learning, understand where they're going, and reflect on how they’re growing, we create the conditions for deep engagement and lasting belonging.

This professional learning session aims to support your work to improve your learning and teaching practices as individuals and as a school. Here, you’ll find tools to help you plan with intention, collaborate meaningfully, and apply strategies that remove barriers to learning. Together, we’ll explore how visibility—through purpose, progress, and feedback—empowers every student to thrive, no matter where they are on their journey.

Before we meet, please:

  1. Reflect on the aims for the professional learning session

  2. View the Billie Eilish and Finneas BIRDS OF A FEATHER (Story of my song) Video and choose one prompt to guide your reflection

  3. Select a unit, lesson, or assessment you would like to develop in our workshop, have the file or resources on hand.

Prompt for Reflection:

As you watch Billie and Finneas explore their creative process, let these questions guide your reflection. Choose one as your starting point and allow it to lead you deeper into the human side of this experience:

  1. Moments of Connection:
Pay attention to the subtle ways Billie and Finneas connect—through a glance, a shared laugh, or a moment of mutual understanding. How do these moments of connection enhance their creative process? What do they reveal about the importance of human relationships in any form of collaboration?

  2. Navigating Challenges with Grace:
Notice how they respond to moments of difficulty or disagreement. What attitudes or emotions do they bring to these challenges? Consider how their grace, patience, and willingness to listen contribute to a more authentic and resilient creative process.

  3. The Joy in Discovery:
Focus on the moments of excitement and joy as they uncover new ideas or find the perfect solution. How does their genuine passion for the process itself shape the final product? How might this joy of discovery be a powerful catalyst for learning in any context?
